“Joanna is charismatic and so, so talented. I would travel anywhere in the world to sing a shopping list with her”

——OO——

"How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" is a song composed by Michel Legrand, with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman for the 1982 film Best Friends. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 55th Academy Awards. In this course, our soloist is Helen Charlston who has sung with The Self-Isolation Choir on several occasions.

However, this is no ordinary Self-Isolation Choir course. Not only will we learn this beautiful piece; we shall also look into the musical theory of harmonisation, taught by the wonderful Joanna Forbes L’Estrange.

“How Do You Keep the Music Playing?”

Our version is arranged by Alexander L’Estrange for a choir of 7 voice parts (SSAATBB) and is taught to us by his wife, Joanna Forbes L’Estrange. Our version is based on this rendition Joanna taught the Trinity College Cambridge choir with Helen as soloist. When you watch this quite remarkable performance of “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” below, please wear headphones if you can and listen carefully to the detailed harmonies and stunning choral support.

The backing tracks recorded specially for this course were performed by Ben Parry and Joanna herself, both ex- Swingle Singers.

This course will focus on HARMONY and Joanna will teach us the how the combination of our individual voices can work together to produce such a wondrous sound.
