Mahler 8

John Warner gives two online lectures on Gustav Mahler:

(1) Mahler’s life during the composition and Première of his 8th Symphony

(2) The music of the 8th Symphony

John Warner recently deputised for Sir Simon Rattle at the London Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Mahler’s DAS LIED VON DER ERDE. He is one of the world’s emerging Mahler specialists and has led courses for Choir of the Earth in Mahler 2 (watch here: https://youtu.be/3ynThTYW9og) and we are currently deep in the entire Mahler 8. We perform the entire Symphony in January 2022 after John’s expert teaching. The entire orchestra, soloists, children’s choir and full choir recorded our parts separately from home.

Around Sound: Mahler 8

In these two lectures for AROUND SOUND with the title of “The Man and his Music”, John will divide his talks into two separate areas:

FIRST TALK - John will tell us all about Gustav Mahler the man as he composed and conducted his 8th Symphony for the first time. On 12th September 1910, Mahler gave his 8th Symphony for the first time in Munich. It was to be the greatest triumph if his life. Yet he was also fighting for his life in private - he knew that his wife, Alma, was having an affair with Walter Gropius and that he might lose her for good. His triumph with his 8th Symphony won her back. It could be argued that the 8th Symphony saved his life.

SECOND TALK - what is it about this “Symphony of 1,000” which is so epic, culminating in one of the greatest finales ever written. Divided into 2 separate parts, this mighty symphony is the nearest Mahler came to writing an opera. John will take us through the music with special emphasis on the development of Choir of the Earth’s production. Just how did he manage to teach and combine all the music for such a marathon?
