Recording with Julie

Recording your voice from home can be difficult and daunting. It’s easy to not feel comfortable pressing ‘record’, singing without any interruptions or submitting your voice thinking your recording could’ve been much better.

Recording with Julie is a series of five live online sessions dedicated to help you record with the utmost confidence.

Julie has been a member of Choir of the Earth since our first course back in March 2020. She has been recording her voice with us for over two years and submitted hundreds of tracks as a result. She also made our popular Recording Tutorials and Sound Engineer Q&A videos.

The sessions will be fun, engaging and supportive, with comprehensive terms to aid your learning if you’re a complete beginner. You do not have to bring anything to the sessions. They will also be made available to watch back as many times as you like so you can rewatch at your own speed.

Course Outline

The course will take the form of five 80-minute (ish) live broadcasts (and can be played back at any time) led by Julie as follows:

Session one: Understanding the science of sound and recording

What happens when you press record? Have you ever “seen” your voice? In our first session, you will be introduced to concepts like sound waves, pitch, interference, overtones, reverb, and dynamic range. You’ll learn to use free online tools to analyse and visualise your own voice.

Monday 15th August, 18:00 UK Time

-

Session two: Equipment for the digital chorister

This session will teach you how to make the most out of the equipment you already have set up without burning a hole in your wallet. This will include a tour of our lead sound engineer (Conor)’s home recording set-up. You will also learn how to shop for an external microphone and headphones and how minor adjustments to your setup improve the quality of your sound.

Tuesday 16th August, 18:00 UK Time

-

Session three: Reviewing digital sheet music apps that work for any device

This session will review 4 different digital sheet music apps (PiaScore, ForScore, MobileSheets, and Newzik), which will be relevant to iPad, Android, Mac, and Windows users.

Wednesday 17th August, 18:00 UK Time

-

Sessions four & five: An exploration of what’s possible using free software like Audacity and GarageBand

Learn simple tricks to fix small blemishes in your recordings, how to re-record a phrase without starting over with a new take, and how to record a long movement in chunks and submit it in one piece. Listen to your own recording against the backing track and become the 4th singer in the Fieri Consort!

Session 4 (Audacity): Thursday 18th August, 18:00 UK Time

Session 5 (GarageBand): Friday 19th August, 18:00 UK Time

So if participating in online choirs has become a hobby of yours and you're interested in learning how you can improve your recordings, maximise your fun, or explore how you can take things to the next level, come along and join Julie’s sessions.
