The Singer’s Toolkit

Join our charismatic Musical Director Ben England BEM for an exclusive and essential course for any chorister keen to develop their musical skills.

 Ben will lead us in his inclusive and engaging manner through a series of nine hour-long sessions covering such essential topics as:

 Improving your understanding of written music: a visual and aural explanation of the main shapes, phrases and symbols on your scores.

Developing your confidence in sight-singing: tips, hints, tricks and exercises to build your skills and help make your score reading more accurate and more enjoyable.

Developing your aural skills: learning to use the most vital part of your musical anatomy - your musical ear. Ben will teach us exercises that we can do in our own time to sharpen our senses and make those tricky entries much easier.

An understanding of how the voice works and how different voice parts work together: Why are certain voice parts better suited for different lines in the choir? What constitutes a difficult line for a bass may be easy for a tenor and vice versa - why?

The fundamentals of conducting: Ben will teach us all the basic shapes and directions that trained conductors use to give us a better sense of what our music leaders want from us. This also provides an invaluable tool to help us learn music faster and perform with greater confidence - the art of physicalising and internalising the beat.

How it Will Work

The sessions are videos and will include a Q&A session at the end to pick up any queries that were originally made. All materials are included, and the sessions are of course recorded for you to watch back as often as you like to catch every delightful detail. This course is aimed at absolutely everyone. No formal musical training is required and Ben will explain everything in his typically detailed and entertaining style.
